Our Programs

The organization’s primary activities develop and promote the growth of at-risk youth through a variety of educational, cultural, and recreational activities. These activities include life skills training and application, career shadowing and apprenticeships, mentoring, and cultural outings. Youth learn strategies to become self-sufficient adults, particularly those youth who “age out” of custodial care group homes and detention centers.

Program courses and trainings include subjects such as How to Write a Resume and Cover Letter; How to Dress for Success and Prepare for Corporate America; and Entrepreneurship Camp. Youth are also exposed to the importance of maintaining good credit, budgeting, saving, investing, insurance, leasing an apartment, and wellness care.

Past program activities included a screening of the PBS documentary, AGING OUT, about youth aging out of the foster care system. Daniella Anderson Rin Hover, portrayed in the film, was present to discuss her experiences of living independently now as a young adult and any advice she has for youth in similar situations. Additional activities for 2006 included career shadowing and mentoring, and a special Christmas holiday gathering.

In 2007 and 2008, the Rod Coleman Foundation sponsored a youth entrepreneurship camp to help prepare youth to create and run their own businesses. Additional program activities will be the continuation of life skills classes, internship and apprenticeship opportunities, field trips, and other cultural and educational events.
